Almost a meme, it is. The idea that PHP is awful and has always been bad somehow spread over the internet, and there's been no turning back. PHP is a widely-used open source and general-purpose scripting language which is primarily made for web development.

In spite of having multiple problems for two decades, it is actually evident that PHP does a lot of things exceptionally well and has a dominant presence on the web. While PHP may not be the most remarkable programming language on the market, it has a significant market share due to its user-friendliness, widespread use on servers, and open-source nature. Below are some interesting facts about PHP.

  • The mascot of PHP is a big blue elephant.

  • ‘Personal Home Page’ is the original name of PHP. Today, PHP is recognized as “PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor ”.

  • Despite being free, PHP is not provided under the GPL (General Public License).

  • Globally, 244M websites were created utilizing the PHP programming language. Thus, it is the most widely used programming language in the web development industry.

  • PHP wasn't created by Rasmus Lerdorf to be used as a programming language. It was just created to administer his personal website. The official version of PHP was published in 1997 following several months of development and beta testing.

  • PHP uses procedural programming, object-oriented programming, and even a combination of the two.
